On board the USS STENNIS during Operation Enduring
Freedom.
One of the newest High Tech Aircraft Carriers of the Nimitz class is
CNV-74
the USS STENNIS. This ship is a small self supporting town at sea, with
around 70 aircraft and 5000 crew members. With a flight deck of 1092 FT (333
Meters)
and 257 Ft (78 Meters) and It's height from keel to mast 244 FT (74
Meters) equal to a 24 story building, it is a small floating air base with
an speed of more than 30 knots. The ship has 4 catapults, so they can
launch 4 aircraft at a time, but this ship is also able to recover two
aircraft and launch 2 aircraft at the same time.
During our visit the USS STENNIS was participating in operation Enduring
Freedom and was responsible for the night opts, the planes were launching
and recovering between 22.00 and 14.00 hours.
On day time the missions ware flown from the carrier of the Nato
country's,
the Italian Navy had their aircraft carrier Gibaldie with the AV-8 and
Choppers, France had their aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle with the
super Etandartd, E-2 and Choppers the UK had sent their aircraft carrier
H.M.S. Illustrious
with the Sea Harriers and Sea Kings. The support was given by assault ships
of the US Marines with AV-8 and Choppers. They had flown missions in
Afghanistan also to support the US Marines.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt who was around the Arabian sea in the
beginning of Operation Enduring freedom was located in the Persian gulf. It
was there to support Northern Watch and Operation Enduring Freedom.
The USS Roosevelt and their battle group had other targets to watch in the
region, also they were waiting for the USS Kennedy who had relieved the
USS Roosevelt of its duty in the Persian gulf.
At the time we were visiting the Carrier the planes of Carrier Air Wing
9
had to fly missions above Afghanistan to participate in Operation Enduring
Freedom. They had only three major targets left in Afghanistan to take care
of. The other missions that the planes had flown was in support of ground
troops and special forces around Kandahar, and CAP missions to defend their
international battle group.
One of the reasons that there were so many Carriers in the Arabian sea was
because it was not possible to fly the planes in over Iran. The government
of Iran had shut down the air space for planes that were involved with
Operation Enduring Freedom. Also Saudi Arabia had forbidden to fly missions
from their country for Operation Enduring Freedom. Only Pakistan had opened
some trails over their country to support Operation Enduring Freedom. They
had opened some Air bases as escape bases for planes with trouble. Right now
the USS Stennis is waiting on its relief, the operations in Afghanistan are
almost to an end. What the next mission is going to be is unsure at this
moment.
But the area around Iraq is HOT, the US is building up Its activity's in the
region.
