| The Polikarpov I-16, which first saw combat in the Spanish Civil War, later in the little know war between Japan and Russia ( May 1939-June 1940). I-16 was one of the world's first modern fighters. Conceived in 1932 and first flown late in 1933, the I-16 could boast of several advanced design ideas for the time, including a retractable landing gear. Though a tough plane to take off with and land, it was good in flight. By 1941, however it was obsolescent. |
