The CG-4 was built in large numbers, than any other glider of the Second World War, and originated from a 1941 US Army requirement for a 15 seat assault transport glider. The XCG-4 prototype was made of wood and metal tube covered largely with fabric, and had a boxy fuselage with high set wings braced to the fuselage by v-struts. The sole all wood XCG-4B did not go into production.
