Martin P5M MARLIN

Martin designed its Model 217 with the wing and upper hull of the PBM Mariner to more powerful engines, a new lower hull, and a revised tail unit with a single fin rudder assembly. It also had radar controlled nose and tail turrets, and a power operated dorsal turret. The XP5M-1 prototype flew in May 1948, and successful test led to production of the P5M-1 with search radar in place of the nose turret, a raised flight deck, and no dorsal turret. The first of 160 P5M-1s entered service in 1952 with 3,400-hp R-3350-30WA engines. The only other production model was the P5M-2, of which 115 were built with a modified hull, a T-tail, and a magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) with a retractable sensor boom in place of the tail guns. The P5M was redesigned P-5 in 1962 and the last Marlins was retired in 1966.
