Military Aircraft Grumman C-1 TRADER Photo by Coil B. Thouanel |

Requiring a transport able to support aircraft carriers at sea with high priority freight and personnel, the US Navy contracted with Grumman for derivative of its S2F (later S-2) Tracker carrier borne anti submarine plane or the COD (Carrier Onboard Delivery) role in succession to considerable more limited types such as the 12 passenger version of the Douglas AD-5 Skyraider. The G-96 design was based closely on the S2F with its fuselage remodeled for the transport role, and as such was fully compatibly with S2F support equipment on board American carries. The type appeared in 1955 as the TF-1 Trader, and 87 were produced. In 1962 these were redesigned C-1A, and the machines were eventually supplemented and finally supplanted by the same company's C-2A Greyhound. |
