Grumman S-2 TRACKER

In the late 1940s the US Navy finalized its requirement for a single carrier borne type able to undertake both the hunter and the killer elements of the anti submarine task. To meet this requirement Grumman designed its G-89, and the XS2F-1 prototype first flew in December 1952 as a twin engine monoplane of high wing layout with a capacious fuselage and large nacelles for the carriage of a comprehensive sensor suite and a sizable weapon load. The Tracker entered large scale service from February 1954 as the S2F-1 and the family then underwent a long development and production career. In 1962 the series was redesigned S-2, some machines are still in service with smaller air arms.
