Developed with Curtiss funds in 1934, the prototype Model 75 flew for the first time in 1935. Although it did not win an official competition, three service test units were order. In flight trials, these Y1P-36 machines were impressive enough to persuade the Army Air Corps to place an order for 210 units, the largest fighter contract since 1918. The P-36 was one of the first monoplane plane fighter to serve in the A. A.C, and deliveries began in April 1938. While only 177 p-36As and one P-36B and 31 P-36Cs were built for the US use, many hundreds more were exported. In all more than 1,000 were built, the highest total for any US fighter of that period. Three Hawk 75A fighters in the colors of Vichy France. Several hundred Hawks, known as H-75A, were bought by France.
