Cessna 0-1 Bird Dog

To meet a US Army requirement, Cessna adapted its Model 170 light plane as the Model 305A with a revised central fuselage and cut down rear fuselage to provide good fields of vision. The wing was also fitted with slotted flaps to improve field performance. The type was ordered into production during June 1950 as the L-19A, and in September 1951 the name Bird Dog was allocated. Production of this model totaled 2,486 including 60 OE-1s for the US Marine Corps. Bird Dog production totaled 3,431, up to 1957, more than haft went to American allies, and in 1962 the series was redesigned 0-1. Another 100 aircraft were built in Japan, and in 972 Pakistan produced more of the type using spares and locally manufactured components.
