Military Aircraft Brewster F2A BUFFALO Musee de 1' Air |
|
Resulted from a 1936 requirement, the XF2A-1 prototype flew in December 1937 as a portly mid-wing monoplane with inward-retracting main landing gear units and its fuselage tailored to the diameter of the 950-hp XR-1820-22 radial engine. Some 11 F2A-1 fighters were delivered from January 1939, and nine equipped squadron VF-3 on board the USS Saratoga as the US Navy first monoplane fighter. Improved models were delivered to the US Navy, but though these saw limited use with three squadron against the Japanese in 1942 they were soon phased from service as overweight, unstable, and generally lacking in maneuverability. Other models were ordered by Belgium, Great Britain and The Netherlands an East Indies. |
