| Air Command and it was decided in 1960 that a number of suitable modified aircraft should be purchased for Military Air Transport Service (MATS) as the C-135 Stratolifter. This would however, be purely an interim solution, giving MATS jet experience pending delivery of the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter, development of which was launched about the same time. IN the event, a total of 48 C-135s was obtained by MATS, which operated them for several years. |
