In 1944 the US Army Air Force invited four manufacturers to make proposals for a jet powered bomber. Boeing eventually arrived at its Model 450 design, which became the first swept wing jet bomber to enter service anywhere in the world. The XB-47 prototype first flew in December 1947, and pre-production B-47A bomber were delivered from December 1950. By 1960 the B-47 was obsolescent, and the last B-47E, bomber was retired in 1966, though some of the specialized derivative remained in service up to 1969.
