Bell Model 412

The civil and military success of its model 212, the twin engine version of the model 205 "Huey", persuaded Bell to consider ways in which to capitalize on this momentum by offering greater speed and range without major airframe modifications. Bell therefore introduced a more powerful engine, greater fuel capacity and , most important of all, a new four blade main rotor assembly. The new rotor used a new hub with electrometric bearings and blades of composite construction, the later based on a glass fiber spar, Nortex honey come filter, and a titanium leading edge abrasion strip. The new rotor offers greater lift and considerably reduced levels of induced vibration. The first model 412 was flown in August 1979, and deliveries began in 1981. In Italy, where Agusta is a Bell licensee, the type is made as the AB-412 utility and Grifore military variants, the latter with provision for heavy armament.
